As soon as our gelato making class was over and we "graduated" we had a quick lunch and departed on a train to the town of Pompeii which took about 30 minutes. Not air conditioned, likely 50 years old or so. Not fancy, but it just got the job done. Ancient Pompeii was a port city, so a lot of commerce went on there. The volcanic ash preserved the city remarkably. It was untouched for about 1800 years before being discovered. It reveals an incredible degree of sophistication in terms of effective government, street layout, sewer system, street signs. We saw a middle class home and a wealthy home (same layout, different ornamentation), wine bars, bakeries, baths, forum. Fascinating. We also toured the lupine, or red light, district. Helpful signs showed the menu of sexual positions so that clients (frequently sailors) and prostitutes could communicate. Excellent guide brought it all to life.
