Early start for our Capri boat tour. Francesco, our captain, made a beeline for the Blue Grotto for those who wanted to go inside because it gets crowded. The area is beautiful, ocean very blue...like nothing we had seen. After taking us there, he dropped us at the Capri marina. We took the funicular up to the town of Capri and had a coffee drink on an outdoor cafe, then walked around a bit. The crowds were very discouraging. So we opted to go to Anacapri, another town on the island. It's higher and less crowded, with even more gorgeous views. Not only that, we rode in style in a convertible taxi. In Anacapri we had an outdoor picnic of tomato and mozzarella sandwiches, courtesy of Francesco, before walking up to an overlook point for taking photos. Beautiful! We then rode back down to the marina to meet our boat. The ride back took us completely around the island, visiting a couple of grottos, and passing through the famous rock formations just offshore. All along the shore in this area, you can see crumbling ancient villas, castles, and watchtowers. Some were built by Saracens Turkish pirates, some by the French, the Normans, the Romans. This island was Julius Caesar's for a time (he built 12 homes here), and his stepson Tiberius lived and ruled from Capri for 10 years. Dinner was in an Italian home. We were served over a dozen dishes, not including wine and homemade limoncello. It was incredible! The cook’s extended family was there, too, including 3 grandchildren. So much fun!! And absolutely delicious.
